Safety

Safety is THE most important thing when it comes to foraging! Below are some safety concerns to keep in mind.

Correct ID

Before eating any mushrooms you forage, you must be 100% confident that you IDed the correct mushroom. Many foragable mushrooms have inedible lookalikes, some of these lookalikes are deadly while others have a bad taste or will cause an upset stomach. It is best to consult a guide that will walk you through the steps to IDing the mushroom. You will need to take note of things such as cap size, colour, mushroom underside, spore colour, habitat mushroom is growing in, smell, and time of year.

Be aware of your surroundings

Foraging for mushrooms often means venturing deep into the forest. It is crucial to be aware of one’s surroundings. This includes bringing the appropriate materials, letting someone know what you are doing and where you are going, and being aware of wildlife found in the area. A good starting point when it comes to materials is ensuring you have the “Essential 10”- Navigation, headlamp, sun protection, first aid, knife, shelter, fire (matches, lighter, etc.), extra food, extra water, and extra clothes.

Harvesting in Wildfire areas

Some mushrooms, like Burn Morels, grow in places where a forest fire has occurred. If foraging in these areas, one needs to be very vigilant for dangers left over from the fire. This includes flooding, landslides, falling debris, ash pits, and danger trees. Danger trees occur when the tree’s roots are burned, but the tree itself still stands. It is dangerous as the tree could fall at any time, especially in windy weather.

Mushroom Quality

Finding a forageable mushroom can be so exciting! However, it is important to note that even if the mushroom is IDed correctly, not all mushrooms are good to be eaten. Old mushrooms may be rotten or maggot ridden and should not be consumed. Mushrooms growing very close to the road, garbage, or contaminated water should also be avoided, as pollutants may have contaminated the mushroom.
