We chose our topic after Tricia reached out looking for a partner interested in mushroom foraging. Ximena and Jolene joined and we are all enthusiastic about mushrooms and learning more!
Tricia has some experience learning about mushrooms, having taken a Mushrooms of BC biology course at UBC. Jolene has some experience foraging for mushrooms with years of walking in the forest, looking and learning. Ximena is excited to learn more. We wanted to spend time researching the fascinating world of mushrooms, and provide others with the opportunity to also learn more.
We chose as our audience to be novice foragers. It can be an intimidating journey to start on your own; knowing where, when and how to identify mushrooms. If you are interested in eating the mushrooms it is especially important, as there are poisonous ones. By creating this guide we hope to provide inspiration to get out into nature and start looking!
We wanted to find a variety of sources. We wanted these sources to be trustworthy because of the importancce of safety regarding mushrooms. We wanted to focus on mushrooms in British Columbia since we wanted to benefit from learning our local area. We specifically wanted a few common and easy to identify mushrooms. In order to find some well-know and trusted sources, we went slightly outside the BC zone, into NW Washington, U.S.
We wanted to find Field Guide books, articles, websites and videos that would be interesting and informational without being too academic.
Overall we are pleased with the variety and scope we are able to gather here in our learning guide, and now we want to go find mushrooms!
